Prerequisites of
membership include:
STUDENT MEMBERSHIP :
(Effective Janaury 1, 2007)
Student membership is the entry level of membership in the Institute. While Student members may provide technical assistance or other support functions, they are not permitted to sign reports and will not be eligible for liability insurance. This member category is being introduced in tandem wit the new admission requirements for Candidates on January 1, 2007.

A $50 rebate will be provided to Student members for successful completion of each eligible UBC course taken, up to a maximum of two courses per year. In addition, the national portion of membership dues will be waived for student members who are enrolled full-time as a student in a recognized post-secondary institution OR who are enrolled in the AIC program of Professional studies on a full time basis (30 credits per academic year.)

CANDIDATE MEMBERSHIP:
Candidate Membership shall only be granted to applicants who:

•  Have successfully completed the We Value Canada Workshop; and
•  Have successfully completed Foundations in Real Estate Appraisal (BUSI 330 or approved equivalent); and
•  Hold a university degree at the undergraduate level or higher;

OR

•  Have successfully completed the We Value Canada Workshop; and
• Have successfully completed Foundations in Real Estate Appraisal (BUSI 330 or approved equivalent); and
•  Have completed all curriculum requirements for the AACI, P.App designation, less 10 courses;

Upon admission to the Institute, the candidate must complete the mandatory Standards Seminar within 24 months of their date of admission.

Prospective Candidate Members:
New requirements for candidate membership take effect January 1, 2007, including completion of a new introductory workshop entitled We Value Canada. As of that date, admission to candidacy is open only to those who either hold a degree, or who have 10 or fewer remaining requirements for the AACI, P. App designation. A new student member category will be introduced as of January 1, 2007. Please contact the provincial association for more information.

The Institute's education program is offered through the University of BC by correspondence. Their toll free number is 1-888-776-7733. If you have specific questions regarding the courses and costs involved in the program please direct your queries to them. Membership dues must be paid annually to maintain active status with the Association.

The Institute requires all members to participate in the Mandatory Professional Liability Insurance Program. Members not involved in fee appraisal work must still participate in the program, but are charged a nominal fee per year for coverage. We recommend that you consult with appraisal professionals in the area where you hope to practice to determine the type of work and positions that are available. It is the candidate's responsibility to obtain a position and find a mentor for fulfilling the mandatory Applied Experience Program. Prospective candidates should be aware that they may need to re-locate in order to obtain the necessary experience (breadth & depth). The Institute cannot guarantee that positions will be available at any given time and place.

Please be advised that effective January 1, 1998 you must hold a degree from an accredited university in order to attain use of the AACI, P.App designation. Effective January 1, 2006, a degree will be required to attain the CRA designation

2005 dues are paid through to September 2005.

Recording Courses:
The University of British Columbia is responsible for recording courses. For more information, contact UBC at 822-8444 or toll free at (888) 776-7733.

Courses must be recorded prior to the scheduling of an Oral Examination.

BCAAIC does not retain education (or other) records for non-members. Upon membership in the Institute, you will be required to provide official transcripts and/or exam result letter to verify successful completion.

Insurance
Please note that the Appraisal Institute of Canada has a mandatory Professional Liability Insurance Program in which all members must participate. Please contact our office for further information and a Candidacy application.

Relations with Local Government, Related Organizations and The Public
The BC Association Appraisal Institute of Canada monitors provincial government affairs of interest to members and has an effective presence in Victoria. The National body liaises with the Federal government agencies. Network & Fellowship The opportunity to meet with and learn from one's colleagues is an essential component of the development of every profession. Local chapter and provincial meetings, seminars, bi-annual conferences, as well as the annual National conference provide a forum for networking and fellowship with peers. Professional Development Continuing professional development is a vital component of any profession. Occasions for designated members to continue their professional development are offered through national, provincial conferences and seminars within a mandatory CPD program. Local chapters hold regular meetings, which provide a forum for discussion, education and networking.

Professional Liability Insurance Program
The AIC provides it's members with a mandatory liability insurance coverage for errors & omissions in the performance of the services for which they are qualified by the Institute.

Group Insurance

A group insurance program is available to members at very competitive rates. The program includes dental and extended health, general life, disability and business expense disability insurance. Each plan can be specifically designed to suit the need of the member and pooled to ensure the best possible benefits and premiums.

Canadian Appraiser
Published quarterly this national magazine provides members and the public with articles on the profession. Articles are written by respected industry specialists on key issues & topics of interest to the membership.

WestCoast Appraiser

The association provides a quarterly newsletter to keep you in touch with changes to policies, what the organization is involved in and to bring you news about activities that may be of interest to you. It is mailed to you and is also offered on-line in the members section of the website.

AIC Designated Membership Directory

These are printed annually. Personal advertising in the directory is available at reasonable costs. The directory is distributed to industry professionals Canada wide through direct mail and also through Trade-shows and functions attended by the Institute and Association. For the public the directory is also available on the website in 'Find an Appraiser'.
